Head of School

Executive Summary

The Good Shepherd School (GSS) located in Purcellville, VA is looking for an experienced professional to be its next Head of School. The Head of School is responsible for the day-to-day operations of the school, including the management of the teaching and administrative staff,  and communications and outreach to school families and the broader community. The successful candidate will feel comfortable with fundraising and strategic planning. This position is a full time, salaried position from 8:00am – 4:00pm weekdays from August through June with federal holidays off, Christmas and Easter break and reduced hours in July and August.

Job Responsibilities

The Head of School will report directly to the Board of Directors and work together with the teaching and administrative staff to lead day-to-day operations and strategic growth of the school. The Head of School will be the chief executive in charge of:

  • Implementing the school’s vision on a day-to-day basis, enriching school culture and student life within the school community.

  • Managing the faculty in their execution of the school’s various curricula and leading the weekly staff meeting.

  • Hiring, supporting, evaluating, and retaining school personnel.

  • Handling issues that arise in the normal rhythm of school life.

  • Communicating with current and prospective parents.

  • Leading and managing the recruitment of new students. This may include opening new grades as the school continues to grow and expand.

  • Teaching a middle school section. Preference will be given to applicants with strong writing and/or math backgrounds.

  • Annual budgeting, routine procurement, contracting, and operations management.

  • Leading the school’s annual and targeted fundraising efforts.

  • Liasing with the Board of Directors and other business staff and ensuring financial targets are met.

  • Representing the school in the local community and building ties with the Catholic communities and business representatives to raise the school’s profile.

  • Reporting regularly to the Board of Directors.

  • Leading long-term growth projects for the school, including seeking accreditation and a permanent campus for GSS.

  • Providing Catholic formation to school personnel and parents.

  • Modeling professional, moral, and ethical standards as well as good character and integrity in all interactions.

About Good Shepherd School

Good Shepherd School is located in Purcellville, Virginia and serves the communities of western Loudoun County and points west. Our mission statement: “Rooted in the person of Jesus Christ, Good Shepherd School is a nurturing, academic environment designed for each child to grow in independence and virtue.”

Beginning with just ten students ages 3-5 in 2016, GSS enrolls 70 students from ages 3 through 14. The Pre-K and Kindergarten programs are prepared Montessori environments, and Grades 1-8 utilize a classical curriculum.

As GSS grows, it envisions adding students at all grade levels, while forming a classical-based high school program. All programs focus on the inculcation of faith, wisdom, and joy in young men and women in order to embrace their vocations as adults upon graduation. We envision a total enrollment of eventually 250 students for all grades combined – pre-K through 12th grades.

GSS is in an important phase of its growth. We are looking for a motivated leader with an entrepreneurial spirit and a strong track record of forming successful relationships and leading by example. The Head of School joins a talented and experienced teaching staff. GSS’s near term goals include increasing the number of staff and enrollment, and opening a high school. Successful fundraising is an important component in realizing these goals.

The preferred candidate will have significant teaching and leadership experience in a school environment. Below are additional qualifications that will be evaluated in all applicants:

  • A practicing Catholic whose faith and prayer life animate their entire life

  • Proven ability to teach, manage, lead teams and develop individuals

  • Excellent communication skills, both written and spoken

  • Solid track record of fiscal responsibility

  • Excellent interpersonal skills

  • Understanding and appreciation of Montessori and Classical approaches to education

Office Manager

Executive Summary

The Good Shepherd School (GSS) located in Purcellville, VA is looking for an experienced professional to be its Office Manager to start immediately. The Office Manager is responsible for helping with the day-to-day operations of the school and administrative tasks such as electronic record keeping, filing, procurements and reimbursements, licensing and facilities management. The successful candidate will  have excellent communication skills and experience working in a team. This position is a full time, salaried position from 8:00am – 4:00pm weekdays from August through June with federal holidays off, Christmas and Easter break and reduced hours in July and August.

Job Responsibilities

The Office Manager will report directly to the Head of School or the Board of Directors as designated on an interim basis and work together with the teaching staff to assist with the day-to-day operations and strategic growth of the school. The Office Manager will be responsible for:

  • Creating and maintaining both physical and electronic files for students, staff members, board members, and general school accounts and activities.

  • Managing payroll for teaching staff, substitutes, and contractors.

  • Ensuring background check compliance, monitoring expiration dates for certifications, updating student information, calendar/scheduling maintenance, and managing paperwork related to our license with the VA Dept of Social Services. This includes maintenance of first aid supplies and the medication lockbox.

  • Serving as a daily lunch monitor or floater or afternoon pick-up coordinator, as needed.

  • Preparing and distributing operational paperwork (e.g. annual class rosters, school supply lists, school directory, updated report card templates, field trip permission slips, etc).

  • Write the weekly parent email and monthly newsletter, be available by phone or in person for questions/concerns, consistently attend the monthly Parent Social and other school events like parent nights, picnics, etc.

  • Writing for and managing GSS social media accounts.

  • Attending and assisting with preparation of all staff meetings, updating staff and parent handbooks as new policies are developed or changes are made.

  • Assisting with maintaining the relationship with the landlord, St. Peter’s, check in regarding logistical/space concerns, etc.

  • Conducting school tours for prospective families and ensuring that all prospective family questions are answered in a complete and timely manner.

  • Coordinating with parents planning events such as open houses and Catholic Schools Week.

  • Managing office expenses – discuss curriculum and supply purchases with teachers, submit expense reports to the board of directors.

  • Ensure volunteer slots are communicated to parent volunteers using SignUpGenius. Parents are responsible for ensuring volunteer slots are filled for Primary Set Up, Parent Social Hosting, Picnic/Event Planning, and Lunch Monitoring, and the inventory of the Uniform Closet.

  • Maintain online access and permissions for qualified individuals. This includes website updates and maintenance and a working file drive for the Board of Directors.

  • Ensure that the members of the Board of Directors meet state licensing requirements, including confirmation that all letters of recommendation and background checks are on file before a candidate begins serving.

  • Collecting the mail, answering the phone, and assisting with the creation and maintenance of the school calendar.
